It is argued that education should be accessible, affordable and provide equal opportunities for all (UNICEF, 2007). Technology plays a crucial role in contemporary education, as technology can be implemented to motivate learners; Buckingham (2007, p. 13) argues, “Technology is seen to provide guaranteed pleasure and ‘fun’ in a way that older methods simply fail to do; and, it is argued, it can make even the most painful aspects of education engaging and exciting”. In contemporary education, there is a vast scope of educational technologies that can be implemented within schools; as a result, teachers now have the opportunity to implement ‘behavioural technologies’ within their classrooms.
“Behavioural technology gives emphasis to the various aspects of behaviour of a learner or teacher. Many a time this is included in teaching itself but special attention is given to its various aspects. It deals with modification of behaviour in the desired direction. Its contents include individuals’ behaviour, its study, feedback and modification” (Pathak and Chaudhary, 2012, p. 9). ClassDojo is an educational application which is designed to equip teachers with interactive tools to manage pupils’ behaviour and performance. The official app makers (ClassDojo, 2019) describe the application as a communication platform in which all parties (teachers, pupils, and their families) can use on a daily basis to support communities by sharing learning via photos, videos, and direct messaging.
ClassDojo is widely advocated in schools in the US, with 95% of elementary teachers applying the application within their school. However, as the application has gained worldwide recognition, and is now implemented within 180 countries (ClassDojo, 2019); ClassDojo is believed to have been introduced into 70% of UK schools since its formation in 2011 (Saner, 2018).
This website aims to explore the advantages and limitations of ClassDojo in order to uncover how the application changes contemporary education.
